DescriptionThere are a few things that you should know about Walt Simonson:
Between his popularity, his lack of commission slots, the popularity of his characters, e.g., Beta Ray Bill, and the lure of free, he has long lines. Very long lines. He does have rules though:
I am not a line stander. In general, I am just as happy waving at the artist with the long line and moving on to someone with a short or, better yet, non-existent line. However, Walt is special plus I finally came up with an idea that I thought met his rules and would satisfy my goals. :) So, one the first day of the Baltimore Comic Con, I got to the show early and assumed my spot in the VIP queue. When we started moving down to the show floor, i briskly (for me) walked to their booth and I was 11th in line. This means that almost everyone ahead of me was either an exhibitor or VIP. I figured I'd get a chance to get my sketch. When my turn came, I asked for his signature as a slide with Sugar and Spike sliding on it. I told him I was prepared to go through his line each day - once for the signature and once for each character. He agreed. After doing the signature, he said show my your reference. My reference included a good size printout of a cover featuring S&S on a see-saw which fit well with the sliding. He added Sugar to his signature! I'd only have to go through this ordeal twice! Go Walt! The next day, I got there a little later, but still close enough to get a sketch - I thought. By the time I assumed my position in the line, I was probably 30th! Well out of the running. :( So, I gave up for the day and headed off. Don't feel bad, I ended up getting a sketch from Alan Davis that you can see here. Sunday, I got to the show so early the VIPs were lining up outside. Lots were Walt fans, but I was close. At the appropriate time, we head to the booths and the line is huge when I get there. We came to realize that those ahead of us were Exhibitors and not paying VIPs or other pass holders. I was sad, but there was nothing to do but wait and hope. :( Then suddenly, a con rep arrived and cleared the exhibitors out like Jesus cleared the temple. The all scurried away. Not one of them stayed. Suddenly, I was in the top fifteen! Walt decided to number thumbs so people could wander away and come back to get their sketch later, I was 12! As promised, he added Spike to the slide. And now I own a Walter Simonson non-standard con sketch! :) P.S., I had Mostafa Moussa re-ink the boarder and printed logo. I just wanted it a little darker than the printer did it. Social/Sharing |

Simonson is the pinnacle of generosity to comic fans. Those Simonson lines are crazy, crazy long.

I wanted to see the picture of the "12" as it is also by his hand. Great idea and well worth the ordeal to come away with something unique.
