DescriptionI’ve made no secret of my love of the Silver Age of comics. My three favorites are Marvel’s Tales to Astonish, Journey into Mystery and Tales of Suspense. TTA was home to Ant-man, Giant-Man and the Wasp, the Sub-mariner, and eventually to the Hulk. So much so that at some point, the numbering continued, and the title TTA went away to be replaced by the Incredible Hulk. Journey into Mystery contained the first appearance of Thor, and like TTA, JIM at some point disappeared to become the Mighty Thor. But, TOS was special. It was where Iron Man was born and where Captain America made his home (besides Avengers Mansion) after returning to comics in the Marvel Universe. Iron Man’s first appearance was in TOS 39, and Captain America joined the book in issue 59. From then on, they split the book till issue 99. At that point, the title became Captain America 100 (that’s why you don’t see a Cap #1 - other than him punching Hitler in 1941), and Iron Man started in his own book. The art in those books show us the Marvel bullpen (and especially Jack Kirby) at the height of their powers. To think how much work Kirby was turning out on a regular basis is just awe inspiring.

Hey...slow down. I can't keep up. Can I have this? Seriously. In your museum worthy collection, there is no longer any room in the Kirby wing. You should put it on loan in mine. Think about it...

You can't out-Cowboy-Stance this piece. You can't out-Bulbous-Head it either for that matter. Put them together and you have a landmark piece of Silver Age Large ART PERFECTION!!!!!!!

Fake Cap or not, this is an awesome page with gorgeous thick inks by Stone—who was an excellent fit on Kirby Cap. Any self-respecting Kirby fan would be overjoyed to have this in their collection. I know I’m jealous!

As great as Kirby was during this period, whenever he did Cap I feel like he gave it 110%. I have no doubt he felt totally turned loose when drawing these stories, and you can tell he took total pleasure in setting up traps for Cap to get out of. This is one of the most magnificent images he did (of, you gotta admit, about a billion magificent Cap images) in that era. If the 1940s Cap was kinda primitive (and a little bit problematic in places), and 1970s Cap sorta generic, the 1960s stuff was *alive*. I love everything about this piece, from the jungle background to the skulking minions' positions to Cap's ridiculous pose in the fg. Ron, just for my amusement, do me a favor and pose like Cap for us. Try to get your family to pose behind you like the minions. I'll wait here.

I genuflect in respect! This is my all-time favorite Cap splash bar none. By drawing the figure of Cap large and also exaggerating his stance, Kirby gives the scene a feeling of power about to be unleashed. Stone's thicker inks add even more strength. Great piece!

Image-wise, those split covers were always a compromise, but issue 60's (perhaps because Kirby was still trying to figure out the best way to do them) was a bit of a mess and the Cap image was more than a bit cramped and stiff as it was shunted over to the left side by the Iron Man inset. Cap in this splash, on the other hand, is as big and bold as Kirby could draw him, and, to my mind, it is miles above that cover image in composition, dynamism and story tension. So, yeah, cheers!

Always liked Stone's inking of Kirby. The finished artworks always had great clarity (the way he thickened the outlines of important characters, made them really stand out). Sinnott was a great match for Kirby, no question about that, but the collaborations with Chic Stone and Syd Shores are favourite with me. This is an outstanding early splash from Cap's run in TOS and is hard to top. As a side-note, didn't Iron Man debut in TOS 39, not 38 as you say in your accompanying essay?

Totally agree. Stone added weight to Kirby's lines more than any other inker. And, I stand corrected. It was issue 39 - description fixed. Thanks Terry!!

So every time I come back to visit this page, I have always assumed I left a comment already. But in scrolling down to read any new posts, I was shocked to see that I never did. For someone who follows your gallery almost religiously, it's a horrifying oversight and I humbly apologize.
This is as powerful a Cap image as I've seen. Artistically (though not historically, of course) I would probably take this over the iconic shot on the cover of Avengers #4. While the inking is superb througout, I really LOVE the bold linework on Cap. It creates such a powerful image that, even in the smaller thumbnail, the figure really stands out. Over his legendary career, there have been countless examples of Kirby's creative and artistic genius. Nice to see this one land in your collection. Thank you for sharing it.
