When Marvel launched their MARVEL PRESS poster series back in 1983, no one was more excited than me. I basically thought of these posters as giant sized comic covers done by some of the hottest artists at my favorite comic company! It was also around this time when I began to get really serious about my original art collecting, so I thought I would make it my collecting goal to get as many of these original posters as I could track down. Well, in the 22 years that Marvel has been publishing this series, I've only been able to get my hands on three. This is the original for Poster #1, the VERY FIRST poster of the series. I also have P Craig Russell's Poster #5 and Mike Mignola's Poster #111. The funny thing about this piece of art is that I guess someone forgot to tell Butch that Marvel wanted all the originals to be done SAME SIZE (i.e., poster sized). So as far as I know, this piece is the only original not done in a large format (see Additional Images). But hey, it's still the very first in a long line of great posters throughout the years. As you can see, this was done in Butch's Micronauts era Michael Golden style. Everything about this piece screams Michael Golden. And to be honest, the only reason I was buying those books back then was because the artwork reminded me so much of Golden. Of course as we all know, at some point Butch eventually developed his own signature style. But seeing this vintage Golden look alike work always puts a smile on my face. My thanks to Wally Harrington for selling this to me all those years ago.

What an incredible piece by the, in my opinion, very under-rated Butch Guice. Man, I used to have this poster back when I wasin high-school, I definitely would have sent it to you if mom hadn't trashed it.... : (

Probably among the top 25 X-MEN images of all time. I won't be surprised to see it in top ten. Amazing piece all around. Congrats !

Wow. I totally forgot about this poster. I had it on my wall as a kid. To see the original art is amazing to see. Thanks for sharing.
