DescriptionACQUISITION DATE: 1993SOURCE: dealer OWNER HISTORY: 1 DIMENSIONS: 22x28 STOCK: single 2-ply CREATION DATE: 1993(?) SIGNATURE: Mignola PUBLICATION: 1993 Cable and Wolverine, version 2.0 - It's interesting that the artist chose to revisit this particular image so soon. After all, it had not even been 2 years since he created the original version of this as the centerfold pinup in Wolverine #41 (seen here). While I don't claim to know his motivations for doing so, I can imagine that any attempt of another version would have to be bigger and better for the artist to be satisfied. In this case, I would like to think Mike was more than happy with the outcome. So how does one improve upon a piece that was already an impressive 17x22 double page spread? The first step was obvious, YOU SUPER SIZE IT! At a staggering 22x28, this version is more than twice the size of its sister piece. Next, like a Director wanting to reframe his shot, Mike went from horizontal to vertical. In doing so, he was able to really elaborate on the background elements in the upper portion of the image. In this case, elaborate seems quite the understatement, as the stunning new background has become almost a third character in the picture. Last, but certainly not least, my favorite change. While Cable was obviously just a second banana in the original version, Mike REALLY brings him out of the shadows here (literally)! Almost by way of apology to the character, Mike just went CRAZY on Cable's costume details. In the end, I suppose it's really NOT the same image. By changing some of the major elements from the previous version, Mike has turned what was an obvious Wolverine piece into a Wolverine AND Cable piece! For my part, I'm just happy to own both versions! My thanks to Scott Dunbier for giving me a heads up on the availability of this piece weeks before the 1993 San Diego Con. And another tip of the cap to my buddy Jonathan for piecing together the individual sections of this huge piece to produce this beautiful scan. Social/Sharing |

...this was probably drawn back in a day when nobody wanted it because they were all busy waiting in line for Rob Liefeld Cable drawings...

This one is fantastic. Mignola really is something else. he wouldn't do a piece like this these days that is really agressive, his style has changed quite a bit, great one.

This piece would really benefit from a photo of you holding it to provide some scale to just how immense it really is! Perhaps when I visit for Super-Con we can remember to do something like that.

Too funny! I was just looking at the Scarlet Witch poster and thinking the same thing. I suppose we could take a photo of me with BOTH pieces. Thanks for the idea buddy!

It was a tough choice when I was offered the poster art because I was also offered a couple of other great pieces and I could only choose one. But since I already had the centerfold, I knew I had to have the poster as well. To this day, I have never regretted my decision.

Magnificent Mignola poster!!!
Thanks Bill. The size and scope of the piece is truly epic. Not sure if Mike has done work on this scale before or since. I just feel blessed to have it as part of my collection.

Both of these pieces are phenomenal. The size alone on this poster is staggering.

Thanks DJ. Still can't believe that I actually managed to end up with both versions of this image. Still can't decide which I like better. There is a new piece that I will post soon with a story that relates to this poster. So stay tuned. Anyway, thanks for the comment and please stay safe.

I actually picked up this poster last year for the first time. Missed it for some reason when it originally came out back in the day. Don't know why I never bought it back then. This was right in my wheelhouse and I bought tons of these Marvel Press Poster back then. Anyway, the original is even better. Congrats!

This is a TREMENDOUS piece - and not only in size! I'd never seen the horizontal version, nor the color poster until now, and I have to say, I think this version is far superior to the original version. The splendid upper portion makes it so, adding that elegant design sense you referenced in your Mignola gallery. And, like much of Mike's work, (and in spite of some EXCELLENT coloring over his career), The B&W is SO much more powerful than the reproduced color image!
And - a confession - I couldn't care less about either of these characters - But still LOVE this piece!
Congratulations!

This is hands down one of Mignola’s best pieces ever, particularly outside of the Hellboy universe. Props to you for being in the art game in the early 90s and hustling to grab those new drops. I was three years old at the time, at home drooling and chewing on this poster lol

Kid in candy stores! Its so hard to make sense of all the feelings! But he's right - this is a devastatingly iconic and amazing piece. I hope your eyes send you a christmas card every year for how well you treat them.

Thanks Doug! While I think arguments can be made either way for whether it works better as a vertical or horizontal image, one thing that can't be argued is the impact of the additional artwork created for the vertical version that was only hinted at in the cropped horizontal version. Also, I've always felt that the Wolverine was stronger in the horizontal version. As far as the coloring choices, it obviously was designed to draw your attention to the two lower characters by almost "hiding" the upper portion. The beauty of the b&w version is that it allows you to take in the piece as one whole perfectly balanced image.

Thanks Bert. I've actually been in the art game since the early 80's. And while I was pretty smart in "grabbing the new drops", I still wish I had grabbed some of the older ones. LOL

Well, if you are ever inclined to make the drive, I'd be happy to show you in person. Then you'd get to see it the way I do. And I promise you, that's even MORE fun. Thanks for the comment buddy!
