Description

Karate Kid vs. Nightwing by Scott McDaniel and Simon Gough

When I made my initial list of opponents for Val Armorr for this commission collection I put Nightwing pretty near the top. And right beside his name I put "Scott McDaniel" because, in my opinion, Scott is the definitive Nightwing artist. Earlier this year I saw that Scott was taking commissions again and I quickly e-mailed him to get on his list. Scott liked the idea and eventually sent me this killer drawing. I haven't seen much inking from Scott, and that is a shame, because he put some lovely inks on this commission. I love the combat poses for each character and the smile on Dick Grayson's face. Thanks again so much, Scott!

Dick Grayson's uncanny agility and high intelligence will enable him to last longer against Val than most opponents. I think Nightwing will dodge and deflect a few blows before Karate Kid gets a handle on him. But before too long Val will start connecting with his strikes and after that Nightwing better come up with either an escape plan or a gadget that will incapacitate Val or it will be game over. In the end I say Val wins, but Nightwing learns a few new moves to add to his repertoire.

Heh, love it! Dynamic as only Mr McDaniel can make it. (Val and Dick did meet briefly years ago in Karate Kids own comic, but this looks like MUCH more fun!)

Yeah, I remember that issue. That was when Dick was still Robin. Karate Kid's solo series was very uneven in quality, mostly due to changing writers and directions, but I loved reading it. I would love to see a story where Batman arranges for Val to come back in time to train him, Dick, Tim, etc. in fighting techniques not known in our century to give them an advantage over other fighters.

These guys are just sparring, they're having ton of fun in the process. Scott opted to depict these two skilled combatants in such a way as to imply that they are revelling in the opportunity to face such a worthy opponent, and the result is stunning. Very, very impressive, Travis.

Yeah, Scott e-mailed me with his thoughts on this matchup and how he would draw it right after I sent him the idea and he knew exactly what to go for.
