DescriptionI've been an LSH fan since the earliest days of my comic collecting life. I got my first Adventure Comic featuring the LSH while sick with pneumonia in the 3rd grade and I've been hooked since. I own virtually every appearance from Adventure 247 ($25 back in the day) to today. The Shooter/Swan/Klein era is remains my favorite art era, but the Dave Cockrum, Mike Grell and Michael (Mike Nasser) Netzer runs contributed mightily to my love the team. As Mike Nasser, Michael Netzer worked with Joe Rubinstein and others to create a run of Superboy and the Legion of Super-Heroes that I enjoyed as much as any - Cockrum and Grell included. Their combined look really appealed to me - smooth clean lines and great design. I really liked it. When Joe Rubinstein wrote to the comicart-l mailing list on Yahoo that Michael Netzer would begin taking commission requests, I jumped at the first chance. In discussions with Michael, I offered a number of suggestions that didn't quite hit the spot for either of us. Though he did a really nice sketch of one of them (See Additional Images). Finally, I asked if there was an image that he would like to draw. He allowed that he had one that he'd wanted to do for some time - an image showing the joy of life in the LSH. I thought it was a great idea. Joe took Michael's pencil drawing and made a blue line copy which he then inked. I think he did an exceptional job; the work really makes the piece pop. I plan to frame them together so that people can see how the inker completes the image. Oh, yeah. The original sketch of the Adventure 247 splash was eventually revised by Michael at Joe Rubinstein’s urging. I think he nailed it. They put it on eBay and I bid, but lost. 😭 If you want a commission from Michael, contact Aardwolf Signatures. You can reach Joe at JosefRubinstein.com. PS. Since I have a scan of the first sketch that Michael did for me, I thought I'd show the original Adv 247 splash and my Al Plastino recreation for comparison. Michael's image is very dynamic and I like it a lot, but I like the final product better. Social/Sharing |

Michael Dunne wrote to the comicart-l, Stunning Alex, simply stunning, this so captures the joy of the Legion ( and comics) that I grew up with and the dynamic talents of Mike and Joe recapture a moment that seems to have vaished for our four color heroes. Thanks so much for sharing. regards Michael

This shows just how joyous and inspiring superhero art can be and why, when I was seven, I dreamed about getting a Legion flight ring.

I shudder to think of the amount of time and effort (and perspective) that went into this--on both pencil and ink sides! Amazing piece, Alex. Would love to see the originals framed together--great idea.
