DescriptionOne of my favorite story lines unfolds in the pages of The Stuff of Legend by Mike Raicht and Brian Smith (writers) and Charles Paul Wilson, III (CPW3) (artist).A young boy vanishes into The Dark, the domain of the Boogeyman. The Boy's beloved toys decide to follow and get him back. Once they crossover into The Dark, they become full size versions of themselves and their weapons, clothes, and physical attributes (teeth and claws) all become real. In The Dark, they face other toys abandoned, lost, and discouraged living in a dangerous world where they find few allies in their quest to find and free The Boy. It's a bit of a dark tale with many a twist and turn. I've really grown to enjoy Charles' artwork. I have a handful of published pieces by him.
But I've long wanted a commission of some sort, but he's been too busy and I didn't have an idea. Recently, his rep at Cadence Comics, Andrew Christman, announced a commission opportunity in July of 2020. With the chance coming, I decided to shoot for a faux Sugar and Spike 100 cover. I'd previously corresponded with CPW3 on that topic and he agreed that he'd be interested when an opening occurred. When the day of the commission list opening occurred, I booked two slots and wrote to Andrew explaining everything. Andrew agreed it was a go though pricing would be different than the published schedule since the piece was so different. A few days passed and we worked out the pricing. At that point, I turned it over to Kathy and, to be honest, completely forgot about it - to the extent when I got a shipping notice I thought it was something else. When Kathy gave it to me as an anniversary present, I was astounded. CPW3 blew way past my expectations. It shows S&S transported into The Dark and, maybe, touched by it. They are surrounded by most (all?) of the the Boogeyman's allies and few of The Boy's friends. What will happen to them if they are in the grasp of The Dark? I like what CPW3 did with the logo; he turned S&S into dolls in the position that they took in the real logo. Nice touch. Who's who: (L->R, T->B, also see Additional Images for a graphical view)
Some of the characters are a little off model, e.g., Max has a mustache, The Mayor (Fillmore) is missing his glasses, Anya has a bit of Cheshire Cat in her, and so on. He wrote back: My drawing’s been evolving, and I’ve been learning how to exaggerate what I’m doing by following other artists’ examples and by experimenting with what I’ve learned, and blending serious takes of existing things with the ridiculous. As you get toward the end of the series you’ll see a bit more of an animated approach to character design and overall figure gesturing. It’s basically growth in a direction. Social/Sharing |

First of all HAPPY ANNIVERSARY. I did not grow up with Sugar & Spike but I find your 100th Issue theme to be interesting & fun. I think my favorite is the George Reeves Superman one but this one has a great "Toy Story meets Monsters " Pixar vibe. The impressive detailing is off the charts. Enjoy
